Our Challenge
We are Jens and Lander. Two guys in our early twenties who are on a mission to visit all 581 municipalities in Belgium. Our starting date is November 1. 2023.
Environment and Community
For the first municipality we went to Aarschot, which is also our first city. It is located in the northern part of the province 'Vlaams-Brabant'. The municipality has more than 30.000 inhabitants and they are given the nickname Osschotteneirs or Kasseistampers.
History and Must sees
The most impressive part of Aarschot was the church (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk) which was built in the 14th century and the stunning view on top of the hill. The peak of the hill is 41 metres above sea level and is located in the 'Maalderstraat'. Another big recommendation is the beguinage. It was founded in 1259, but after less than 300 years the beguinage had to be rebuilt. In 1543 it was destroyed by a fire. The original character has therefore not been completely preserved. The last beguine, Maria-Anna Jans, died in 1856.
The river that flows through the city is called the Demer. With a length of 85 kilometers the Demer flows in both Limburg and Vlaams-Brabant and is a part of the Schelde river basin.
Exploring Suburbs
The municipality Aarschot consits of Gelrode, Landorp, Rillaar and Aarschot itself. The first three are sub-municipalities.
