Discovering Herselt

Our Challenge

We are Jens and Lander. Two guys in our early twenties who are on a mission to visit all 581 municipalities in Belgium. Our starting date is November 1. 2023.

Environment and Community

For the second municipality we went to Herselt. In addition to Herselt, the municipality also consists of sub-municipality Ramsel and three hamlets namely Blauberg, Bergom and Varenwinkel. It is located in the southern part of the province of Antwerpen and therefore borders the province of Vlaams-Brabant. The municipality has a population of more than 14,000 and until 1980 factories provided local work for the residents. The men and women who worked in the local brickyards and clay pits were soon nicknamed Potjèrdabbers.

Must sees

De Mixx

Herselt consists largely of greenery, as almost one quarter is forest. The largest forest areas are Hertberg, Varenbroek, Helschot and Langdonken. Further in the article we will show you some nice walking routes through these forests.

The most famous thing in Herselt is probably 'De Mixx'. It is a paradise for sports fanatics. You can do gymnastics, indoor football, wall climbing, fitness and much more. The domain has football fields, tennis courts, padel courts, numerous sports halls and you can even learn to ski indoors.

There is one river in Herselt and that is the Grote Nete. The Grote Nete later flows into the Nete and is therefore part of the Schelde catchment area. It would be technically possible to travel via the water from Herselt to the North Sea.

Discovering Herselt

Since Herselt is a green municipality, there are also various walks. Below you will find some recommendations:

Domein Hertenberg "12,8km"

It's a walk through the forests of Blauberg. During the walk there are various resting spots and different surfaces. You can walk on dirt, sand and grass. There are even some lakes where you can enjoy beautiful views.

Natuurreservaat Goor "8,8km"

It is a mixed walk. You will see a chapel, statue, special moss vegetation and loads of trees.

De hartslag van de Hertberg "10.8km"

The ideal walk to do with your family. You pass play forests, picnic areas and horse stables.

Allied Forces Museum

A museum dedicated to the Second Wold War. It was founded in 2010 with collected attributes of the Allies. There are 15 vehicles and 2 artillery pieces to be found.

Special activity

Every year on Ascension Day, the wheelbarrow (kruiwagenrace) race takes place in sub-municipality Ramsel.
